Reclassified is a high-end boutique fragrance company founded in Shanghai in 2013. Its mission is to share with the world China’s cultural heritage through its unique perfume blends. The name Reclassified is supposed to signify the company’s refusal to be classified as a typical perfume brand. They state: “We want to subvert the usual impression of perfume by endowing it with the soul of philosophy. We believe that all things have their own place in the universe, and everything is inextricably interlinked. All elements, be it humanity, history, art or philosophy, can be the source of inspiration for the creation of a perfume.”
As part of its Peking Opera perfume range, Reclassified has created six exotic perfumes with tea compounds as the main component. The names chosen for each perfume are linked poetically to Chinese tea – through many twists and turns of traditional Peking Opera.
Sheng designates the lead male and Dan is the female lead performer. Jing are the characters with painted faces. Red paint (black tea) connotes good, black is brave (or reckless), yellow is brutal, white face characters are treacherous and cunning and blue-faced are wild. Chou is humble, whimsically alive and common. Mo plays a supporting role. Long tao characters are largely unnoticed “but integral in order to make the opera come alive.”
Each perfume is sold in 80ml bottles and priced at 395 yuan, Shopping options are not easy for people outside of China.
